We’re
only human
In the busy, modern world; it’s easy to forget that we’re human animals, with
instinctive methods for dealing with stressful situations. When physical,
chemical or emotional demands are placed on us, the body perceives them as a
“threat”.
Sensing a “danger”, your body becomes defensive and stooped, this I call the
fight or flight reflex.
It prepares for battle or escape by tensing muscles, releasing adrenaline,
dilating the pupils, and elevating your pulse, blood pressure and sugar levels.
It also shuts down functions not needed for immediate survival, such as your
immune system, digestion and sexual function. If stress continues over a period
of time, the body can get locked into this defense reaction – acting as if the
stress is still occurring – for days, weeks, months or decades. In this state,
your body stores the stress in and around your spinal column, making health and
healing impossible. You may become sick often and easily, and you may begin to
feel pain and tension in your body. Spinal pain and other symptoms often begin
when your body gets to the point where it can’t absorb any more stress or
tension. If you’re feeling anxious, ‘tight’, tired or you’re experiencing spinal
pain, it’s definitely time to get help…
